Types of Blackout Curtains

Types of Blackout Curtains

Blackout Curtains are primarily crafted from Polyester or Polyester-Cotton blends. The distinguishing feature of these high-performance fabrics lies in the specialized construction or coating applied to the reverse side. Depending on the desired level of light exclusion and durability, different materials and techniques are utilized as follows:

1.Blackout Curtain (FOAM COATING)

Foam-Coated Blackout curtains have a thin, sponge-like layer applied to the back. You can choose between 2-layer or 3-layer coatings for extra light protection. Because the foam can crack or peel if it gets wet, these curtains should not be washed. Instead, we recommend regular vacuuming to keep them clean and free from dust mites.

2.Blackout Curtain (SILICONE COATING)

Silicone-Coated Blackout curtains use up to 4 layers of silicone on the back to block out the sun. The great thing about this type is that it can be washed, but you have to be careful. Always use a gentle cycle for delicate fabrics and keep the water cool (no more than 30°C) to keep the silicone layers in perfect condition.

3.Blackout Curtain (FABRIC BACKING)

Fabric-Backed Blackout curtains are made by sandwiching a light-blocking layer between two pieces of fabric. This gives them a soft and smooth feel on both the front and the back. You can wash these curtains just like the silicone type, just make sure to use a gentle cycle for delicate items and keep the water temperature at 30°C or lower.

While Blackout Curtains offer exceptional sun protection, they can sometimes make a room feel overly “rigid” or enclosed. We recommend pairing them with white sheer curtains. This layering technique softens the incoming light and adds a graceful, fluid movement to the decor, creating a much more airy and comfortable atmosphere.

The Difference Between Blackout and Dimout Curtains

The Difference Between Blackout and Dimout Curtains

While Blackout curtains provide 100% light exclusion, Dimout curtains serve as a popular alternative for balanced lighting. Designed as light-filtering fabrics, Dimout options typically allow 10-40% light transmission, ensuring the room remains private without being entirely dark.

Their versatility, wide range of color options, and cost-effectiveness make them an ideal choice for any room where you seek a bright yet shaded atmosphere on a flexible budget.

Which rooms need Blackout Curtains?

Which rooms need Blackout Curtains

Due to their 100% light-blocking capabilities, Blackout curtains are highly versatile for various spaces, including:

  • Rooms with continuous sun exposure: To effectively block intense heat and harmful UV rays.
  • Bedrooms: Ideal for night-shift workers or those sensitive to external light pollution during the day.
  • Home Theaters: To simulate an authentic cinema atmosphere by eliminating all screen glare.

The Key Benefits of Blackout Curtains

The Key Benefits of Blackout Curtains
  • Perfect Sleep: They block 100% of light, including annoying street lights, so you can sleep soundly day or night.
  • Cooler Rooms: They help lower the temperature by 2-4°C, keeping your home comfortable while saving energy.
  • Furniture Protection: By blocking UV rays, they stop your skin from being harmed and keep your furniture from fading.

Furthermore, specialized collections offer advanced features, including Flame Retardant properties and Allergy Care technology to minimize dust accumulation.

Limitations of Blackout Curtains

  • Stiffer Look: The fabric is thicker than Dimout, so the curtain folds might not look as soft or perfect.
  • Hard to Iron: Wrinkles are very stubborn, and for foam-coated types, some creases might stay forever.
  • Durability: Coated and silicone versions may peel over time, making them less long-lasting than standard fabrics.

Every product has its pros and cons. Until new technology comes along, we suggest choosing the type that best fits your actual daily usage.

Can you wash Blackout Curtains?

Can you wash Blackout Curtains

Always check which type of Blackout fabric you have before you start cleaning. The most important step is to look at the care symbols and warning tags attached to the curtains. Every fabric is different, and following these small icons will help you avoid accidental damage.
1. Foam-Coated Type: Because this curtain has a foam backing, it is very delicate. It creases and cracks easily, making it very hard to wash. A common problem is that if it gets wet and you fold it to dry, the foam layers will stick to each other and ruin the fabric. Most professional shops won’t risk washing this type; instead, we suggest using a dust mite vacuum service.

2. Silicone-Coated Type: This is an upgraded version of the foam type. It is more flexible and can handle being washed or ironed, but you still have to worry about stubborn wrinkles and fold marks. To keep them in top shape, vacuuming is the best way to clean them. If they really need a deep wash, it is highly recommended to call in the experts only.

3. Fabric-Backed Type: These curtains have a layer of fabric on the back, making them very durable and easy to care for. You can wash and iron them just like regular curtains! Because the fabric is quite heavy, it might be hard to handle on your own. If you find them too bulky to wash, it’s best to use a professional laundry service.

If you’ve decided that Blackout curtains are exactly what your bedroom needs, but you’re worried about measuring or installing them yourself, don’t worry! Just reach out to the Infinity Design team.
